General Meeting Representatives of the member organisations of EurAdopt came together for a General Meeting in Barcelona from 31st March to 2nd April 2006. The meeting was arranged by the local EurAdopt member organization AAiM, in co-ordination with the EurAdopt Executive Board. At the General Meetings the members discuss topics of common concern, meet the new Executive Board and Council, approve of annual reports and accounts, plan their activities and determine the budget for the two coming years. At the meeting in Barcelona Ms. Elisabet Sandberg from Sweden was appointed as the new chairperson of EurAdopt. Ms. Inge Elsässer from Germany and Mr. Angelo Moretto from Italy will join Elisabet Sandberg in the Executive Board of EurAdopt. The next General Meeting will take place in Venice, Italy 3 - 6 April 2008. Open Day In conjunction with every General Meeting an "Open Day" is planned on issues of common interest. The Open Day at the meeting in Barcelona had "Intercountry Adoption in the Best Interest of the Child" as its headline. The director of the Central Adoption Authority of Catalonia, Ms. Rosa Bertran i Pedrero, gave the opening speech. Among other speakers were Ms. Jennifer Degeling from the Permanent Bureau of the Hague Conference, psychologist Raquel Fürgang, adult adoptee Ms. Christina Violeta Thrane Storsve, Ms. Anne-Marie Crine from the Central Adoption Authority in the French Comunity of Belgium and the new EurAdopt chairperson, Ms. Elisabet Sandberg. Several of the speakers, as well as members of the audience, expressed concern over the high number of "private adoptions" that are allowed by the government of some states to proceed without sufficiently safeguarding the rights and the best interests of the children. Council and Executive Board The highest body of the association between the General Meetings is the Council. The member organisations in each country elect a council member with a substitute. The Council thus has 12 members, and meets in April - also in years when there is no General Meeting. The 2007 Council Meeting was held in Luxembourg 31 March - 1 April. In coordination with the Council, an Executive Board, made up of a chairperson and two other members, is responsible for furthering EurAdopt's objectives between the General Meetings. Secretariat The permanent secretariat of EurAdopt is provided by the Dutch member organisation Wereldkinderen. The countries and member organizations that have the chairperson and the two other members of the Executive Board provide additional secretarial help. |
